of a hundred of such cases the applicant, rather than

abancon his share of the family property, sorrowfully

takes his departure and little more is heard of him,

Nothing in my opinion could more usefully serve to prevent

indiscriminate or interested applications for certificates

of British nationality on the part of Chinese than legis-

lation calling for as a sine qua non, a preliminary re-

nouncement on the part of the applicant of all interests

on the mainland, which are contrary to Treaty and could

not be invested in the British subject of non-Chinese.

descent.

The relinquishment thereof would afford evidence

of a genuine desire to become, end to remain, a Eritish

subject, all consequent disabilities, from a Chinese stand-

point, notwithstanding. It would moreover greatly strengt-

hen the hands of His Majesty's representatives in China,

who are often at a loss to decide whether or not a claimant

for protection be seeking to enjoy the privileges of a dual

nationality, inasmuch as it must be taken for granted that

such endeavour constitutes the real and only motive under-

lying the application.

A list of Chinese holding certificates of registration

is appended.
